January 1943… Freedom Rising

Change… new directions… imperial doctrines… When you have nothing less to lose, giving your life gains new meaning. We are going to be tested soon in ways that a few years ago would have been unimaginable. But consider this… in the 1920′s before the rise of Hitler and the Nazi’s would you have even thought this imaginable? Incremental and fundamental changes to the Germanic race brought them to this place. The intelligentsia and the scholars of the day were as wrapped up in it as the thugs and monsters. The churches knew and did nothing. The entertainment industry worshipped the ground Hitler walked on and helped him in his rise to absolute power. The largest armies of the day were too late in coming. No one had clean hands. Not one of the people left breathing from that time in that place does to this day.

Sometimes the Poles have trouble gaining the correct respect from tyrants though… http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/02/opinion/obamas-misstep-on-poland-and-a-history-lesson.html?_r=0

70  years ago today, a forlorn and belated bid for freedom and human dignity started. On 18 January 1943 German troops entered the Warsaw Ghetto to round-up 8000 Jews for transport. For the first time they met armed resistance. To say they were surprised would be an understatement, in four days they manged to round-up only between 5 and 6000. The difference in the Ghetto was marked, once resistance began, so did unarmed resistance and hiding as well as many refusing to leave even forcing the Germans to kill them in place.

This self-induced to return to human dignity and the right of resistance was the direct precursor and cause of the much more famous uprising (more like urban warfare) that we remember as the Warsaw Uprising in April when the troops again entered the Ghetto to set about its ultimate dissolution.

The following article is an op-ed from the Jerusalem Post.
