Since this is the day the airwaves will be filled with more promises that can’t or won’t be met, I thought it was worth a repost.
Mister Mac
The history of the State of the Union is a pretty interesting one for most people who study such things.
The requirement for the President to prepare and deliver his views of the country are contained in the Constitution,
“He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”
Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution
It is not required for the President to deliver the message in person. George Washington delivered his in a speech format but Thomas Jefferson was afraid that delivering the speech in this manner was too imperious and reminded him of a monarchial behavior. The following Presidents must have agreed since it was not until Woodrow Wilson that the practice of personally delivering it returned. Since that time, the SOTU has been used…

Tonight, the President kicks off his re-election campaign. It will not be your traditional State of the Union address.
While I agree with you about his purpose, I was wondering when he actually stopped campaigning from the last time? I know they all sort of do it, but in my lifetime I have never seen it done so blatantly and with such lack of shame for not doing his real job.
OK…maybe we have to change the name for this President. Maybe it should be called the “State of Illusion.”…”State of Confusion”…”State of collusion” (think about it…look up collusion…if might fit)…etc., etc. etc.
I have to admit, I always got excited when Ronald Reagan delivered his State of the Union address. I don’t mean just when he was delivering it, but knowing that we were going to hear and enjoy “The Great Communicator.”
Reposted for the good of humanity from my comment of today on an earlier post on this blog on this very subject:
There should be a State of the Union report card from year to year. A truth detector agency should be developed for this, as well as campaign truth policing, and other vital societal sectors where truth is imperative……That is all…CARRY ON!!!!
Measurement for job performance? What a novel idea. It will only happen when there is real accountability. Here’s a thought: pay (and retirement benefits) per performance. You do your job, you get paid. You do it consistently, you get a retirement… the same reitrement you give to our fighting men and women.
Is it my age — been there, done that — that keeps me from having any interest in President Obama’s “state of the Union” or any other speeches?
Apathy? Twisted truths?
Of course, had the speech been by a Republican president, I would have listened. SMILE.
It might have been a little interesting if he had actually used a new one…lol
Perhaps in the near future we will have one that will make us all proud.
