Large Slow Targets – One Ship’s Story LST 808

LST 808 burns at Ie Shima May 18, 1945 after being hit by a torpedo. She was later beached and was destroyed by a Kamikaze on May 20, 1945. She had collided with APA 62 USS Berrien on May 11, damaging the APA.

I am reminded every once in a while that even though some ships are designed to fight the enemy directly, there is still a lot of honor and bravery in those ships that the Navy euphemistically classified as “Amphibs” and “Auxiliaries”. In my 1943 Bluejacket’s Manual, the vessels were not even listed in the ship identification section. 

As it turned out, before the war was over, those ships come closer to the hell of battle than many of the larger ships that seemed to have more glory.

A few days ago, I got a request from a reader to see if I had any information about his grandfather’s ship the LST-808. I don’t keep a lot of files on many ships other than the ones I have written about so I suggested that he visit the Naval History and Heritage Command web page. While I was waiting for a Zoom call to start, I went on line myself and found some great information about the ship.


“It was true that the LST – for Landing Ship, Tank – had an ungainly, awkward appearance. LSTs were somewhat smaller than a typical freighter, but they probably appeared fairly large to [Ernie] Pyle because of their boxlike shape. The U.S.- designed and built LST of World War II was 328 feet long and 50 feet at the beam, with a large, open deck area, which could serve as another transportation deck for supplies, weapons and vehicles. The bow was blunt and high, with doors which swung open to permit lowering of a steel ramp. Although the ship was designed for ocean travel as well as beaching, the bow seemed to push a lot of water when an LST was fully loaded and sitting low. Nothing “sleek or fast,” the LST was built for a speed of 10.8 knots. But there were those who said this was an exaggeration.

Right from the beginning, the LST’s slow speed and high freeboard area invited the nickname, “Large Slow Target.” There were variations on this theme and one crew said theirs really meant “Last Ship (to) Tokyo” while a broached LST was sometimes called a “Large Stranded Target.” It took LSTs a long time to get anywhere, and the deck logs of various ships detail days and weeks of crawling across the sea: Eighteen days from Hawaii to the Solomons; twelve days to cross the Atlantic; and a week to reach the Aleutians from San Francisco – a journey that most ships complete in three days.”

The story of the LST 808

LST-808 was laid down on 1 August 1944 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 15 September 1944; sponsored by Mrs. W. I. Oliver; and commissioned on 29 September 1944.

Typical loads

One Landing Craft Tank (LCT), tanks, wheeled and tracked vehicles, artillery, construction equipment and military supplies. A ramp or elevator forward allowed vehicles access to tank deck from main deck

Additional capacity included sectional pontoons carried on each side of vessel amidships, to either build Rhino Barges or use as causeways. Married to the bow ramp, the causeways would enabled payloads to be delivered ashore from deeper water or where a beachhead would not allow the vessel to be grounded forward after ballasting

During World War II, LST-808 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the assault and occupation of Iwo Jima in February 1945 and the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto from April through June 1945. LST-808 was torpedoed by a Japanese kamikaze off le Shima on 18 May 1945. Grounded on a reef following the torpedoing, she was destroyed on 11 November 1945 and struck from the Navy list. LST-808 earned two battle stars for World War II service.

Cables tell tale of WWI attack on Naperville Ensign’s ship

On the evening of May 19, 1945, the tank landing ship LST 808 was anchored at Ie Shima, the island on which a sniper had killed famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle. It was midway through Operation Iceberg, the battle of Okinawa, and the ship was supposedly hidden in a man-made fog of oil smoke. However, the joke was that the letters LST stood for Large Slow Target.

The 327-foot ship had previously served at the foot of Mount Suribachi, on Iwo Jima. She carried seven officers and a crew of 204. The communications officer was Ensign Robert K. Steunenburg, who would later become a Naperville resident and one of Argonne National Laboratory’s finest scientists.

At 2207 hours, the LST 808’s engine room was hit by a torpedo from a low flying plane. The enormous concussion opened a five-foot hole in the hull, instantly killing the five men in the engine room and filling the air with the smell of sulfur.

From the gray-painted communications room the following cable was sent: CROWBAR 808 THIS ANCHORAGE HAS RECEIVED HIT X ENGINE ROOM DAMAGED Then another: WE HAVE 6 FEET OF WATER IN TANK DECK An order to assist went out and was answered. BRAINWAVE WE ARE STANDING BY TO ASSIST CROWBAR 808.


But assisting was difficult. BRAINWAVE IMPOSSIBLE TO BEACH CROWBAR 808 IN THIS SMOKE WE HAVE GONE AGROUND ONCE. But the ship soon got free and went, with another LST, to beach the 808, which was now listing dangerously. CROWBAR 808 SLIP UP ANCHOR X BACKDOOR WILL ASSIST TO BEACH

Most of the crew was off the ship by 0300, and the salvage officers began the task of removing everything valuable or secret. A security detail of five was on the ship when, at 1837 hours on May 20, a kamikaze from the 50th Shinbu Squadron at Chiran Air Base flew his Hayabusa fighter plane into the forward superstructure and crashed all the way down to the tank deck. None of the men on board the ship were badly hurt.

Just another day in paradise. The final toll was 17 dead and 11 wounded.

The world has changed a lot since 1945 but the need for ships like the LST 808 has never gone away.  While we always hope for peace, it is good that the country will have ships like the new USS Pittsburgh to fill the vital need in the face of global challenges.

  1. Interesting article from a Submariner. I enjoyed and brought back a bit of nostalgia. Early in my Navy career I was in the ‘Gator Navy.’ Two APDs and one LST. Those T’s were tough old Large Slow Targets. We rode out Typhoon Agnes off Okinawa in August 1957. 60 Foot seas, 160 Knot winds. One of the times I had kissed my butt goodby, but we made. God wanted someone on that ship to survive.

    1. Thanks. My Dad was on an LST for a short period of time during WW2 so I have it in my genetic code. The City of Pittsburgh will be getting its first Gator Navy boat in a few years. The LPD-31 was announced last week and we are pretty excited.

  2. I had orders to an LST upon graduation from EM-A school but was held back as I had refused an offer to attend the Naval Academy Prep School. I sat in the transient barracks for months until the powers that be figured I wasn’t going to change my mind, then I was off to Nuclear Power School at Mare Island.

  3. LST-808 was built in Evansville IN, as was LST-325, which sails up and down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers as the last of the WWII LSTs still operational. She tied up in Pittsburgh twice over the last 20 years or so, just a few hundred yards upstream of Requin (SS-481.
