Observations on Japanese character, with special reference to Japan’s ambition and her relation in this connection with the United States. A confidential report from Admiral Greaves (1920)

I debated trying to shorten this post up a bit then decided that the story had so much significance, cutting pieces out would be difficult and would not be fair to the purpose I intended. I have been featuring some articles recently about Japan and its navy. One of the characters that came into view […]

Mr. Roosevelt’s Views – Japan through Teddy’s eyes

I see there is another book out about Theodore Roosvelt. To Rescue the American Spirit: Teddy Roosevelt and the Birth of a Superpower (The Presidential Series) Hardcover – October 21, 2025 by Bret Baier (Author) I am a huge fan of Theodore Roosevelt. July – August 1925 the US Navy Spends Time Down Under

I was visiting my favorite Library of Congress website today that features newspapers from the history of the US. One of the featured stories on the front page of the Washington Times for August 1, 1925, was about how many American sailors married Australian women after a recent port visit. The story brought a smile to […]

Do we need a Navy League?

For many years after my dad died, I kept a few mementos of his on my desk. Mom had given me his wallet among other things and in the wallet was his driver’s license, a card from his days as a Red Cross volunteer, a veteran’s card from his discharge as a navy man and […]

Navy Lives in the Past – Admiral Fullam’s View in 1925

Warning- This article may piss you off if you think the US Navy of today (and its bureaucracy) is on the right course This is the fourth in a series of stories about naval preparedness in the 1920s, but it could be ripped from today’s headlines I have previously written about Admiral William Fullam and […]

Happy Navy Day 2024 – The 75th Anniversary of one of the worst bureaucratical decisions in history

A cautionary Tale on Moving Companies – why you should never use US Prime Movers Inc from Linden New Jersey

Greetings from Summerville South Carolina I know it’s been a while, but we have been very busy getting settled into our new home and there hasn’t been much time to write. We did make it to the pool at least once and it was very nice. We have even had some nice conversations with people […]

Happy Birthday United States Navy – 2023

The United States Navy turns 248 years old this year. Ships and aircraft of the fleet are sailing around the world today in defense of freedom, just as they have for most of her rich history. At this time, despite pressure from many quarters to change her focus, she remains the single most powerful and […]

Navy Day 1923 – Illusions of Peace

Editorial from the DAILY KENNEBEC JOURNAL Wednesday, October 10, 1923 “I knew by the smoke that so gracefully curled Above the green elms, that a cottage was near, And I said, ‘If there’s peace to be found in the world, A heart that was humble might hope for it here.’” NAVY DAY It is become […]

Submarine Month 2023

I have been involved with the Pittsburgh Council of the US Navy League for about ten years. It’s a great organization that reflects the connection between Pittsburgh and the Navy and in particular, the submarine service. Most people who are not fully aware of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania probably would not know how much the […]
