This black and white video comes from the National Archives. It shows life on board a Japanese submarine in the Indian Ocean.
Some interesting features include firing their deck gun, riding on the surface at night, sleeping arrangements (yes, they slept next to their torpedoes), off watch activities like playing cards and other games, preparing the food (lots of canned goods mixed with fish)
The fish were gathered off of the deck while the boat was surfaced and in motion. I guess that was a good way to extend their food supply.
While I never served on a diesel boat, I can imagine many of the things in this film would be somewhat familiar to those who did based on research and watching old World War 2 movies
