Unauthorized Absence 2

I made it a point of pride to never miss a ship’s movement or a muster for my whole career. I can remember driving like crazy through the erratic traffic only to get stuck in a long line at Makalapa Gate thinking “The Chief is gonna kill me”. But somehow, my angels always made sure I was where I was supposed to be at the appointed hour.

There are times when being present is more than about just being there. There are times when you have to work through whatever issues you may be having and continue to be active where you were sent. There are so many things going on in the world right now that it sometimes can be overwhelming. Despite all of that, its important to get back in the game when life throws you a curve ball.

I wrote a story for the Chaplain’s Corner that talks about Standing the Watch. I think all people who love this country have been added to the watch bill. One thing about being on watch civilians may not be aware of is that once you have the watch, you have it until you are properly relieved. We were taught that from the very beginning.

General order of the Sentry

1. To take charge of this post and all government property in view.

Once you have been given that authority, no one can take it away from you until you are properly relieved. No excuses. What happens on your watch is yours. Suck it up, take your responsibility and follow the rest of the General Orders in kind.

Each of the orders is significant but #8 should be tattooed on the forearm of every American standing watch right now.

8. To give the alarm in case of fire or disorder.

“While this is rather straightforward and obvious, keep in mind that a fire or disorder of some kind might be a deliberate distraction to keep you from observing some other disorderly or subversive activity. If you are certain that a fire is not meant to be a distraction, you should fight the fire if you have the means to do so. Remember, however, that your first responsibility is to report whatever is amiss”

There is a fire growing in our country. We must remain vigilant. Anything less is admitting that we have lost the battle forever and that is not an acceptable answer.

Not on my watch.

What about yours?
