  1. Is he related to Oliver Hazard Perry. ( I grew up on a street named after him and his trip from Pittsburgh to lake Erie).

      1. Why do I see some photos of subs show hull numbers on the sail and others do not?

      2. A lot of the photos with hull numbers were stock photos done by the shipyards either during sea trials or for photo ops. You will almost never see identification numbers now except in port. In port, boats will have banners on the brow or a placard on the sail that is removed when underway.

  2. Back around 1967 when aboard USS Mariano G Vallejo SSBN-658, we had just surfaced in Puget Sound on the way to pick up our warshots at Bangor when we got challenged by a Coast Guard patrol boat, which is another story. We had no identification as we had just left PSA and all identifiers had been removed. We on the Gold Crew were taking the boat to Pearl Harbor after the loadout for the Blue Crew to take it on the first Deterrent patrol (later in its life Vallejo would get credit for doing the 2500th Deterrent Patrol). Anyway submarines remove identification when actively performing missions and have for years.
