USSVI Charleston Base Meeting September 12 2024

I’m going to keep this short.

We have been moving into our new house for the past week and it’s been kind of stressful. I’ll write more about that in a few days because we learned a lot on our twenty first move including what company you should NEVER EVER use. But tonight, I just wanted to reconnect with my friends that follow the blog.

I went to the USSVI Charleston Base meeting tonight. It is held at the FRA club in Goose Creek SC. Thanks to them for allowing me to join tonight. I will try and live up to their ideals. They are fantastic partners for the USSVI and have been incredibly generous in sharing resources and space with the Sub Vets.

Subbase Charleston is the third largest USSVI base in the country. I believe it will be even bigger under the current leadership. The meeting tonight was great. Tons of information. Lots of examples of service to submariners and the families that have supported them. A special award from national USSVI for my friend Budda at the After Battery. Well deserved,

For me, though, it was the welcoming nature of the shipmates I met. That was the best part. I felt like I had found a home.

Thank you. I really needed that.

  1. Lost my first comment. As I was saying, Welcome Aboard shipmate. I’m sure you will be a great asset to our base. Were you a crew member of the Halibut during one of her cable tap operations? I just finished reading BLIND MAN’S BLUFF for the second time. I was a crew member on the Seahorse during one of those missions with the Parche.

In regards to a moving company, when I moved my second wife ( my first love) from Silver Lakes, California to SC I used Gold Star movers because they are a veteran owned company. Little did I know they were going to sublet the move to another company, Belkin’s. It was a complete disaster . They showed up late without enough manpower and zero packing materials. To make things worse, what started out to be a $4,500.00 move ended up costing $11,000.00 move. Some things were broken or destroyed and many items never made it at all. I put in a claim for the documented missing items in 2021 and have never received a dime.

    1. Good morning Jeff
I was on board Halibut after her last mission. They needed some fresh hands to help decommission her and I was available.
The moving experience this time was horrendous. I felt like after twenty previous moves I was ready for anything but like most things in life, never say you are ready for anything.
Looking forward to hearing your story in the near future.
      Mac
